Chief Medical Officer Recruitment

We’re looking for someone who is accountable for creating an environment, culture and ways of working  that promotes parity of esteem and delivers high quality, person centred integrated mental and physical care and puts Somerset at the heart of innovation in care and research & development (technological and clinical) both within the region and nationally.

Welcome

There has never been a better time to join our Trust as we consolidate the considerable change we have gone through over the last three years following two mergers to create Somerset NHS Foundation Trust (SFT). We are unique in providing the first NHS Trust on the English mainland to provide community services, mental health and learning disability services and acute services from two sites, as well as a quarter of GP Practices in Somerset. As Chief Executive I have overseen the mergers which took place against the backdrop of the pandemic and the re-organisation of health and social care services into 42 Integrated Care Systems, one of which is Somerset ICS. I continue to be proud and privileged to lead our hardworking and committed 13,000 staff, recently recognised by the CCQ for the way in which they treat the people who we serve.

Our Chief Medical Officer needs to be passionate about population health, tackling health inequalities and leading to provide person centred integrated care. As a key member of the Unitary Trust Board of Directors you will work closely and cohesively with the Executive team with shared responsibility for the performance of quality, workforce, finance and implementation of national priorities.  We are looking for an exceptional medical leader who has the skills to create the conditions across the whole health and care community of Somerset so that doctors and other professionals are able to work together in an integrated way to provide excellent person-centred care in the most cost-efficient manner possible. A kind and compassionate leader you will be accountable for creating an environment, culture and ways of working that promotes parity of esteem and puts Somerset at the heart, of innovation in care and research & development across the region and nationally.

Given the complexity of our services it is likely that you will already be an experienced medical leader and ideally will have worked in a blend of NHS settings including acute, community and mental health. You will recognise the importance of System leadership and will enjoy being an ambassador for our medical workforce, trust and population.  For us to be successful we must deliver medical workforce modernisation and improvement, encouraging innovation in clinical practice. As Chief Medical Officer you will be skilled at leading through others and developing your team of medical leaders as we continue on our journey to truly integrated individual person centred care.

If you have the ambition, compassionate leadership and experience to really make a difference for our staff and the people of Somerset then please do consider joining us.

I look forward to meeting you during the process,

With best wishes,

Peter Lewis, Chief Executive
